The Old Man in the Woods by the American Artist, Lyonel Feininger, inspired me to create my version of the painting with a futuristic slant.

I was drawn to The Old Man in the Woods because of its theme and use of color. The painting reminded me of my childhood and walks I took with my Uncle in the Black Forest. It also brought back some memories of illustrations from Grimm’s Fairy Tales, which I enjoyed so much as a child.

Feininger’s use of color for the background and trees is especially captivating. One can’t help but be drawn into the forest with the old man. The use of white oil paint for the moonlight creates a glow not only on the old man but manages to light up the forest as well.

I recreated the forest with similar colored trees and background. I used triangular shapes for the trees to give them a futuristic feel and arranged them with varying, short distances to give it an encompassing feeling, similar to the original painting. I swapped the moonlight with a search beam shining down from an Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) in the sky, looking for the old man, who can be seen hiding behind one of the trees. I added some animation with a second UFO and a search beam, that when activated creates an invasion field of some sort, to give my art an H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds feel.

I enjoyed this assignment very much and only ran into some difficulty when trying to add some boolean logic to the draw function.
