I was immediately drawn by the bold geometric shapes and colors of "Fish" by Joan Stack. My p5 sketch attempts to recreate the sense of movement evoked by the sleek shape of the fish as well as the colorful repeating diamond pattern. One difficulty of trying to mimic a painting in the browser is that it loses the spontaneity and human touch by being too precise and symmetrical. I wanted to add back the human element by allowing users to control where the fish and diamond patterns appear. The transparent bubbles, which appear randomly on the canvas, evoke the unpredictable beauty of brushstrokes on a canvas.
Through the development of this sketch, I ran into walls where my ability to execute fell short of my creative ambitions. For instance, the original concept had been for the fish to swim across the screen, leaving a trail of diamond-shaped pattern behind it. However, I wasn't quite able to figure out how to have the background overwrite the fish with each frame without overwriting the diamond trail. I hope to revisit this sketch in a few weeks once we've covered more ground in p5.
